CH2M HILL selected to start up, operate two new cities
Denver, Sept. 7, 2006 — CH2M HILL, a global, full-service engineering, construction and operations firm, today announced its operations and maintenance business has been selected to provide city operations services for the soon-to-be cities of Milton and Johns Creek, Ga.
The Governor’s Commission for the City of Johns Creek voted 5-0 Sept. 6 to enter into negotiations with CH2M HILL for city operations services—one week after the Governor’s Commission for the City of Milton reached its own 5-0 decision in favor of the firm.
“These are votes of confidence in our company and in an exciting new public-private partnership model for city operations,” says Gary Miller, CH2M HILL senior vice president. “This is a validation of the tremendous hands-on operations work our team does every day in communities throughout North America and in particular in the new city of Sandy Springs.”
Following in the footsteps of the neighboring city of Sandy Springs, incorporated last Dec. 1, citizens in unincorporated Milton and Johns Creek pushed for cityhood as a means of improving the level of service to citizens. Voters overwhelmingly approved ballot referendums in July that will turn both Fulton County communities into cities Dec. 1, 2006.
With scopes of work that include administration, public works and community development, both Milton and Johns Creek plan to closely follow the private-sector model established in Sandy Springs. In this landmark partnership in Georgia’s first new city in 50 years, CH2M HILL provides all major services except police and fire to a population of nearly 90,000.
“We believe the private-sector model will create better reliability and service, and lower costs for Milton,” says Ron Wallace, chair of the Milton commission, which signed a memorandum of understanding with CH2M HILL earlier this week. “We were able to see and touch what the company’s doing in Sandy Springs, and we heard directly from that city’s founders and leaders. CH2M HILL has the people power and is ready to go.” Time is of the essence, Wallace says, because the new city must open its doors to its 20,000 residents in under three months.
Johns Creek’s Robert Horne also cited the company’s track record in city operations as a primary factor in that commission’s decision to negotiate with CH2M HILL to serve the future city of 62,000.
“I’m delighted that the Governor’s Commission made the unanimous decision to enter into negotiations with CH2M HILL,” says Horne, who chairs the Johns Creek commission. “It’s clear the company is doing a wonderful job for Sandy Springs. While Johns Creek is somewhat different than Sandy Springs, we are confident we can negotiate a satisfactory contract that provides the citizens of Johns Creek with excellent services at acceptable costs.”
