Client confidence brings renewed partnerships
Multiple contract renewals in 2010 provide a solid indicator of client satisfaction and confidence in CH2M HILL’s work. Three water/wastewater clients renewed their contracts earlier this year – Americus, Ga., (a CH2M HILL partner since 1994) and Coos Bay, Ore., (1996) each signed a five-year contract renewal, and Rio Rancho, N.M., (2002) signed a four-year renewal with an option of four additional years. Live Oak, Fla., (1997) signed a five-year contract renewal for public works services, and Sandy Springs, Ga., (2005) renewed its municipal services agreement for 2011. We also continued partnerships with three confidential industrial clients, with a five-year renewal in Marietta, Ga., and one-year contract extensions in Mineral County, W. Va., and Guayama, Puerto Rico.

Planner’s website helping revitalize hometown
Randy SimesAs a planner, Randy Simes has contributed to the launch of community development departments in Florida, Georgia and Louisiana. But while he lives and works in metro Atlanta, Randy left his heart in his hometown of Cincinnati. In 2007, frustrated by local media focus on suburban living, Randy launched UrbanCincy, a website dedicated to re-igniting the passion and excitement of Cincinnati’s dynamic urban environment. Through original news stories, photographs, research and perspective from a diverse team of contributors, UrbanCincy has become a recognized source of news on Cincinnati’s urban core. Since its launch, the site has won two Best of Cincinnati awards and has been featured in the Cincinnati Enquirer and other publications, as well as radio shows, websites, and organizations such as the Trust for Public Land. It has even been discussed by best-selling author Richard Florida. Randy’s work is helping change the conversation about urban living and bringing downtown Cincinnati back to life.

Elisa M. Speranza
President’s perspective

Bright yellow buses once again pass the house each morning, carrying the excitement and renewal that accompany the beginning of a new school year. As youngsters eagerly board, I can’t help but think of children in developing countries who can’t go to school due to a lack of clean water and sanitation. Each year, CH2M HILL hosts a global Workplace Giving Campaign to benefit Water For People, an organization that helps the world’s most impoverished people by supporting locally sustainable drinking water, sanitation, and health and hygiene projects.

CH2M HILL has supported Water For People since its founding in 1991, and 2010 marked our eighth Workplace Giving Campaign. I’m again inspired by the generosity of our employees who reached into their own pockets to raise nearly $200,000 to help others despite the economic downturn. Many of our employees also share their time, skills and expertise on Water For People committees or projects. Clean water is one of our most important valuable resources, and everyone has a right to safe drinking water and sanitation.

Next month we look forward to World Water Monitoring Day, officially celebrated Sept. 18 but observed in various ways throughout early fall. This international program builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of local water bodies. It’s a great educational experience for school classes, scout troops, environmental groups and other organizations.

Finally, for many families the start of a new school year means paying for college. We were pleased recently to award the Henry Huffman Memorial Scholarship to the children of six of our employees. These students, from Farmington, N.M., Manassas, Va., Fayetteville, Ark., Moundsville, W. Va., Portland, Ore., and Grants, N.M., each received $1,500 to help fund tuition at the college of their choice. Recipients are selected based on SAT/ACT scores, high school grades, activities, and an essay, where the passion of this year’s recipients truly shone through. The scholarship program, in place since 2001, is named in honor of a 17-year employee who passed away in 2006. It’s just another of the many ways we demonstrate commitment to our values of Community and People First.

Remember to be on the lookout for those yellow buses, and please drive safely when they are around. Have a wonderful start to your fall.

Respectfully,

Elisa M. Speranza
President
