Our communities
Cooking, collecting and educating about careers
Volunteering to help make a difference in the places where we live and work is simply part of the way we do business at CH2M HILL OMI. Here are some of the latest ways our people have stepped up to serve.
- In Central, La., our team supported the city’s second annual “Cookin' for Our Kids” event, which raises funds for technology and educational improvements for all city schools. In addition to serving as a gold-level sponsor, CH2M HILL OMI employees co-sponsored a cooking team. The event exceeded its goal and raised more than $250,000.
- In Denver, employees sold dog- and cat-themed pins to collect more than $330 for the Denver Dumb Friends League, which cares for lost and abandoned animals, adopts pets to new homes, and offers educational services for pet owners.
- In The Dalles, Ore., project manager Kim Barte volunteered at Columbia Gorge Community College’s annual career fair, sharing his knowledge and passing out literature about careers in the water and wastewater industry. About 2,000 high-school and college students attended the fair.
Our partners
Three recognized with 2007 Partnership Awards
Three city leaders have earned CH2M HILL OMI’s top award for clients, the Partnership Award, presented annually to exemplary individuals who work with CH2M HILL OMI to accomplish mutual goals. Recognized for their strong support in 2007 are:
-
Larry Webb, utilities division manager for Rio Rancho, N.M. We have operated and maintained the city’s water and wastewater system since 2002. Webb helped the team successfully manage a 500-year flood event, contribute to several community causes, and maintain a strong safety record.

Eva Galambos, mayor, and John McDonough, city manager, of Sandy Springs, Ga. We have provided municipal services to this city since it opened its doors in 2005. Galambos and McDonough have not only provided superior leadership for their city but also openly shared what they’ve learned with other officials. Their vision and understanding helped launch a groundbreaking partnership that has served as a model for other communities to follow.
The Partnership Award was established in 2005 to acknowledge the important contributions that all of our clients make to the company’s overall success.
Newspaper recognizes Johns Creek, Ga., for open government philosophy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution named Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker as one of the paper's eight “ Heroes of Open Government” for 2008. The recognition is presented to private citizens and public officials who are nominated by readers and who “used or enforced open government laws in ways that served their communities.” Editorial page editor Cynthia Tucker presented the Mayor his award on March 18, following the publication of a complete profile about the Mayor and his work. Since the city was incorporated in 2006, CH2M HILL OMI has partnered with the city to provide municipal services.
3 clients among ‘100 Best Places to Live and Launch’
Fortune Small Business magazine searched the U.S. for the top towns that combine a great business environment with alluring leisure offerings. Congratulations to the CH2M HILL OMI clients that made the resulting list of “ 100 Best Places to Live and Launch”: Georgetown, Texas, at No. 2; Fayetteville, Ark., at No. 82; and Rio Rancho, N.M., at No. 83. Criteria for selection included economic conditions such as local tax rates, natural beauty, and easy access to museums and other amenities. In these cities, CH2M HILL OMI operates and maintains the water system, wastewater system or both. By the way, our headquarters metro area, Denver, Colo., made the list at No. 7.
Our people
Meet Herb Washington, community champion
CH2M HILL OMI serves clients primarily through three regional markets – and the Southeast Region is led by Vice President of Delivery Herb Washington. Herb, who celebrated his 5-year anniversary with the company last month, previously was president of an intergovernment relations consulting firm and earlier directed several city departments for Orlando, Fla. He deeply believes in community involvement.
Personally, he has been a youth basketball coach for 27 years. And professionally, he has inspired his CH2M HILL OMI colleagues to commit even more strongly to service, too. Three years ago, Herb implemented a community service day as part of his regional team meetings, asking managers to volunteer to help make a difference in the city where the meeting is held. “There is great personal satisfaction in giving back to where you live,” says Herb. “I’ve seen the positive impact that community involvement can have.”

President’s perspective
Since it’s April, and we’re in the business of providing environmental solutions such as smart water, wastewater, public works and community management, I want to call attention to the two environmental awareness events that occur this month: Earth Day on April 22, and Arbor Day on April 25. We are hearing from more of our clients that respect for the environment is an important value for them, as it is for us.
I just read a great article in April’s Governing magazine – called “ Mr. Sustainability” – that reminds us of the importance of focusing on “being green” all year long. The story profiles the work of John Coleman, 30, who serves as the sustainability director for the City of Fayetteville, Ark. (where we’ve managed the wastewater treatment system since 1987). Supported by the mayor and city council, Coleman is tackling the task of getting the city to essentially use less of everything – energy, gas, office supplies and more. And he's not alone – more and more communities and industrial clients are focusing on "green" practices that help the earth and the bottom line. Even small steps can add up to big results, like reducing energy spending in just one department by 40 percent.
Please take a few minutes to read the piece and perhaps get some new ideas on how your city or company can do just one more thing to make your operations more sustainable. I’ve challenged our own team at CH2M HILL OMI to come up with ideas for how we in our business can be more sustainable too. We are proud of our "green collar" work force and the great job they do every day to protect public health, the environment and the quality of life in the communities where we live and work. Here at CH2M HILL OMI, every day is Earth Day.
Respectfully,
Elisa M. Speranza
President
